JD Horn is one of my favorite authors. I have followed his works since the inaugural Witching Savannah series through to the end of the Witches of New Orleans series. JD Horn weaves great storytelling and dynamic character development into a captivating story arc that grabs you from the first page to the last.I devoured The Final Days of Magic in a less than 48 hour sitting. Barely could put the book down. I even bought an extra copy to give to a friend. I highly recommend it (and the two companion books: The King of Bones and Ashes / The Book of the Unwinding) to readers that enjoy well written fiction and intriguing inter-character dynamics that drive the story. You won’t be disappointed.
I've read (and loved) all of JD Horn's previous books and I couldn't wait to read this once it came out. He tells such vivid stories that you feel like you're there. This book fell short in many way. The flow of the story arc was choppy. I never got a sense of where it was going or why. Character motives felt flat, unclear. Previous books, I felt like you didn't need much knowledge of local customs of lore to enjoy, but this book I felt like the lore was heavy handed to the point it was inaccessible if you weren't from (or very familiar with) New Orleans.All in all, I just felt like there was no build up to grand finale that this story deserved. I wanted to love it, but I kept falling asleep reading it instead.
Ugh. I never have problems with books, but this series (and this book in particular) is not worth reading in my opinion. There is SO much going on, and I have a hard time figuring out what is actually happening. A lot of the story lines seem forced or unnecessarily drawn out. It’s all just weird. I feel like I missed the first two books and walked into a well established story, but I felt like that during the first book and it’s only gotten worse.This third book is dragging on and on and on, and truthfully the only reason why I’m still reading is so I can mark off the “Read all three books in a series†on my 52 books in 2019 reading list. Save yourself a lot of time, skip all three books and read his Witching Savannah series instead.
I really really wanted to love this book. I loved the first two. And I LOVED the other series. But.... eh. This one really fell flat. It felt extremely rushed at the end, with very little explanation or depth. It felt like the author knew what had happened and just didn’t tell us. Everything from chapter 34 on was a mess. Bummer
There was a nice clear ending to the series but this book was just too choppy. The switch between the three main characters was a little distracting along with the long explanations of the mythology. I liked the epilogue the best.
