This book starts off horrible; it's dark and graphic and doesn't appear to make sense.. BUT... it finishes strong. I'm glad I stuck with it but it's more of a borrow than a buy kind of book. I'd be nervous to start it again based solely on the beginning 8 chapters.

Dieses Buch hat mich aufgrund seiner Thematik (Self-Harm) und aus persönlichen Gründen (ich bin nicht betroffen) interessiert. Auch schreibt hier eine Autorin, die dieses Buch schrieb, um ihre Vergangenheit, in der sie ebenfalls am Borderline Syndrom litt, zu verarbeiten.Das Buch wird zu Beginn in sehr kurzen Abschnitten/Kapiteln geschrieben, da es kurz nach einem Vorfall spielt, bei dem Charlie sich geritzt hat und fast verblutet ist. Das Buch wird aus ihrer Sicht erzählt und vermittelt anfangs Taubheit, Distanz, Misstrauen aber auch Angst. Das empfand ich als sehr eindrucksvoll und die Autorin kostet dieses Stilmittel voll aus, sodass wenn Charlie sich öffnet und zugänglicher wird, auch die Abschnitte länger werden. War die Palette an Emotionen anfangs noch sehr eintönig und begrenzt, wird sie im Laufe der Handlung vielfältiger und bunter. - Später gibt es wieder einen Vorfall, der dazu führt, dass Charlie sich wieder ritzt und danach sind wieder die Abschnitte sehr kurz, etwa eine halbe Seite lang. Sie ist wieder sehr verschlossen, spricht nicht und es werden wieder Dinge wie Taubheit und Distanz vermittelt. Das fand ich sehr gut.I say sadness what I really mean is black hole inside me filled with nails and rocks and broken glass and the words I don't have anymore.Seite 20Die Darstellung von Self-Harm empfand ich als sensibel und einfühlsam und "gut". Charlie zum Beispiel möchte sich nicht töten, ihr hilft das Ritzen als Abbau von Druck, als eine Art Ventil für all die Gefühle und Gedanken in ihr, die sie überwältigen und mit denen sie nicht anders umgehen kann, als sich zu ritzen. - Self-Harm ist natürlich etwas sehr persönliches und individuelles und nicht pauschal auf andere die mit Self-Harm zu kämpfen haben, anwendbar. Dennoch wurden die Gründe für Self-Harm und Self-Harm an sich verständlich dargestellt, sensibel und einfühlsam eben. Es hat mir geholfen es zu verstehen.Außerdem hat mir die Charakterentwicklung von Charlie sehr gut gefallen. Hat sie sich zu Beginn noch ihren Gefühlen und dem Drang zu Self-Harm hingegeben, entwickelte sich in ihr der Wunsch dagegen anzukämpfen. Allerdings war es sehr schwer für sie diesen Wunsch zu realisieren. Einmal weil ihre traumatische und wirklich krasse Vergangenheit ihr wie ein Klotz am Bein hing und dann verliebte sie sich auch noch in einen Alkoholiker, der sie mit hinunter gezogen hat in diesen Sumpf aus negativen Gedanken und Gefühlen.Ein weiterer Pluspunkt waren auch die vielen anderen Charaktere in dem Buch. Jeder hat ein Päckchen mit sich zu tragen, manche sind einfach nur unsensible, egoistische und ignorante Ar***löcher und andere sind wirklich freundlich und hilfsbereit und es hat mich jedes Mal unglaublich gefreut, wenn jemand Charlie ehrlich geholfen hat. Etwas was ich allerdings nicht verstanden habe ist, dass Charlies Mutter so kalt und gefühllos ihrer Tochter gegenüber ist, sie nicht bei sich aufnimmt und sie auch nicht unterstützt. Solche Mütter sind für mich immer absolut surreal, weil die Liebe zwischen Mutter und Kind für mich das stärkste Gefühl der Welt ist und es hier fast nicht existent ist.Charlies Hobby Zeichnen fand ich auch wundervoll! Darin verarbeitete sie auch ihre Gedanken und Gefühle sowie Erinnerungen. Etwas das ihr auch geholfen hat, ihr viel bedeutete und sie noch sympathischer machte!Fazit:Ein Buch, welches ich euch nur ans Herz legen kann! Sensibel und sehr einfühlsam erzählt und das Verständnis vermittelt.

Page after page of pain, sorrow and despair.But that's life. Some aren't lucky to have a happy and cozy life. Some have to fight their way through pain so intense that it threatens to eat them alive. Pain that makes them their own worst enemy.This is the kind of life that Charlie lives. There is nothing pretty about it. At all.She's 17 and a cutter. But she's so much more than that. She's a lost girl who doesn't know how to find herself and how to find her strength. She's suffered loss, abuse and tragedy. And she just doesn't know how to hold on anymore. For her, even living life one moment at a time is barely possible.Saying she's got it tough is an understatement. And it doesn't get much easier throughout the book. I was expecting the usual hardships followed by sunshines and flowers and birds singing. But that wasn't the case.It was unrelenting sorrow and sadness throughout most of the book and yet there was hope mingled into it all. It wasn't big gestures and events, but the small fire inside of Charlie that kept her going. A fire she didn't even know she had.Her journey was uncomfortable to witness. There were times I wanted to put the book aside, read something happier. I didn't want to be confronted with all of this anguish. But at the same time I owed it to Charlie to read her story, to stick with her and listen to her voice. I couldn't just stop reading. I needed to know what happens to her, if she makes it or not. It was tough and touching and devastating to be immersed in her world and in her head. Just thinking about it it I'm tearing up again.And it wasn't just her pain that was hard to bear. Most people that were in her life didn't live the house and picket fence dream. They were all damaged in their own way and did terrible things to themselves or others.Their was an honesty about this story that left a strong impression on me. It made the story real and even though fiction, it gave people a voice, who are rarely heard.5+ the-tears-just-keep-coming stars.
